Description
Job Goal:
The Director of Athletics, either directly or through the proper delegation of authority,provides leadership in planning, and the development, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s athletic program and the Health, Physical Education, and Driver Education department.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum of 3 years experience in athletics.
2. Must possess a valid New Jersey Supervisor, Administrator or Principal certificate.
3. Demonstrated leadership in the organization and administration of a district level athletic program.
4. Strong organizational skills.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
6. Demonstrated ability to work under time sensitive demands.
7. Required criminal history check and proof of U.S. citizenship or resident alien status.
Reports to:
High School Principal/Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Performance
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
Policies regarding Rules and Regulation
1. Represent the District at meetings of the NJSIAA and other athletic conferences which South Brunswick participates in.
2. Develop, plan and implement rules and regulations governing the operations of athletic events.
Physical examination monitoring
Coordinates with the District doctor
Student athlete behavior during school hours and after school activities
Crowd control procedures
Eligibility requirements for NJSIAA and NCAA
Security arrangements with police and first responders
After-school safety provisions for all the athletic teams
3. Mentor all members of the coaching staff to ensure professional growth and development of all staff members.
4. Recruit, evaluate and recommend candidates to the principal for the coaching positions.
5. Establish and promulgate appropriate standards of conduct for all coaches.
6.
Manage all selling and collecting of tickets and funds for the Board of Education.
Personnel
1. Recruit coaches.
2. Evaluate athletic staff performance (Secretaries, ATC’s and Coaches).
3. Recommend appointments.
4. Hold seasonal coaches meetings.
5. Distribute all athletic information to all members of the athletic staff.
6. Work collaboratively with the Director of Building and Grounds to ensure that all fields and playing areas are well maintained.
Health, Physical and Driver’s Education
1. Provides leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive health/physical education/driver education programs for the district.
2. Based on knowledge of research, current practice, national/state initiatives, student outcomes, and program evaluation, develops short and long-range plans for maintaining and improving physical education programs.
3. Responsible for the writing of programs and curriculum based on research and student needs, which include: program objectives, course proficiencies, scope and sequence,instructional activities, methods of student assessment, and standards of achievement in health/physical education.
4. Ensures quality instruction, coordination, and continuity of health/physical education/driver education curriculum.
5. Works cooperatively with other departments to provide for articulation across program and curriculum areas and to improve the educational opportunities and support services for all students.
6. Provides professional development, training, and resources for staff and students pertaining to the health and safety of the student experience and physical well-being.
Director Responsibilities:
1. Interscholastic athletic events grades 6 through 12.
2. Scheduling athletic practices.
3. Coordinating with school facilities.
4. Scheduling officials, staff management workers, and police officers.
5. Arrange for transportation needs grades 6 through 12 athletic events. Prepare an annual budget to order supplies and equipment.
6. Ensure each program maintains an equipment inventory.
7. Develop a uniform replacement program.
8. Coordinate with the Business Administrator to handle the facilities scheduler (such as Facilitron).
9. Manage the Pay-to-Participate program.
10. Manage the facilities and the security needs for home and visiting teams as well as spectators.
11. Implement and comply with the rules of Title IX of the Educational Amendments and Title VI of the NJ Administrative Code which provide for equal opportunity for members of both sexes in teams, equipment, facilities, supplies, compensation of coaches, scheduling and the selection and payment of officials.
12. Arrange the “What We Have Achieved” program for the Board of Education, seasonal awards and, NCAA signing celebrations.
13. Supervise the outdoor Snack Shack for fall football games, and the indoor Snack Shack for winter season games.
14. While the Marching Band is considered an athletic sport and falls under NJSIAA, the Director of Athletics only has the responsibility to coordinate facility scheduling and usage for all Marching Band and Winter Guard rehearsals, practices, and events in collaboration with the Music Supervisor and music staff. To provide secretarial support to the Marching Band and Winter Guard Directors by managing transportation needs and facilitating communication regarding facility use throughout both seasons.
15. Maintain end-of-season items: scores for contests, records, honors and awards, letter winners and awards.
Community Relations
1. Work cooperatively with all community agencies involved in the student athletics programs such as the township Recreation Department, SBAA, Soccer Association, PAL, Young Lacrosse etc.
2. Communicate with staff, parents and other members of the community concerning matters related to student athletics. (Website, Twitter etc)
3. Works cooperatively with the Student Council to create and encourage a “Viking Spirit at all school events”.
4. Serves as the administrative liaison with all of the booster and support groups associated with the various high school teams.
5. Maintains and holds students, staff and spectators accountable for the highest level of sportsmanlike behavior.
6. Perform any other duties as assigned by the High School Principal or the Superintendent of Schools.
Terms of Employment:
The salary and work year for this position will be determined by the Board of Education.
