TITLE: B - 401 -  Principal - Elementary 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 
Master’s Degree
Valid New Jersey Principal’s Certificate
Effective skills in the areas of organization, leadership, motivation of others, communication, and effecting change.

REPORTS TO:
Director of Elementary Education
JOB GOAL:
To provide leadership to the end that the educational program functions efficiently in providing the best possible education to the children it serves.  To exercise full responsibility for the organization and administration of all activities, personnel and physical facilities involved in the educational program in the building.  The Principal observes and supervises all staff members, full time or part time, certified and non-certified, at the assigned site.  The Principal may be aided in evaluation of staff members by other district personnel who have district wide responsibilities in specific subject areas or programs. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Educational Program 
Assigns and promotes students
Selects instructional materials with appropriate staff members.
Assists teachers to meet the instructional needs of students.
Schedules time of teachers and students in the most flexible and efficient manner which can be developed.
Shares in the development of system-wide curriculum policies.
Controls student behavior.
Student accounting.
Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying.

B.  Personnel Services
Recommends and selects instructional and secretarial/clerical personnel.
Assigns instructional and secretarial/clerical personnel and supervises all personnel who work in the building.
Orientation of all personnel who work in the building
Evaluates services of all personnel and recommends their continued employment.
Counsels personnel.
Develops and supervises the in-service training program within the building.
Chooses, supervises and aids substitute teachers.
Promotes effective communication and interaction between the nursing staff and other departments and/or staff members in the school.
In conjunction with the School Nurse Supervisor, interviews and recommends the selection of new nursing staff members, recommends the employment of nursing staff adequate to meet the District’s health needs, recommends the assignment, transfer, promotion and separation from service of nursing staff members.
Provides input to the School Nurse Supervisor with regard to the supervision and evaluation of the performance of nursing staff members.

C.  Community Relations
Confers with parents and other citizens.
Develops procedures for reporting student progress to parents and supervision of the reporting process.
Works with the PTO and other lay groups.
Makes decisions regarding the participation of organized school groups in non-school activities in consultation with the directors or advisors of such groups.

D.  Funds and Facilities
Prepares the school budget request.
Manages and allocates the budget appropriation.
Schedules the use of facilities and equipment.
Supervises the operation and maintenance of the building and grounds.
Shares in supervision of the building transportation program.
Controls student behavior on buses.
Shares in planning of alterations and additions to the building.
Distributes and inventories of supplies and equipment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.  This position is part of the Wayne Township Administrators’ Association.

ANNUAL EVALUATION:

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on the evaluation of  certificated staff.
