Salem City School District is seeking applicants for a School Nurse to work at Salem Middle School (3rd - 8th grade).  This position will be available for the 2024-2025 school year.

Salem Middle School is located at 51 New Market Street, Salem NJ. This is a 10 month position.

NJ School Nurse Certification required.

SCHOOL NURSE

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Valid Certificate of a School Nurse and current State of New Jersey Registered Professional Nursing License.
  2. Maintains a valid Provider’s Cardiopulmonary Certification from the American Heart Association.
  3. Demonstrates expertise in school health nursing practice.
  4. Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues, and wellness education.
  5. Knowledge of community health and social services resources and ability to communicate effectively with non-school health professionals and social service agencies.

JOB GOAL:

To promote health and safety in the school environment with the teaching of sound health practices.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Works in cooperation with the school physician, other health professionals including family physicians, DYFS, or other social agencies, members of the staff and parents to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence due to illness.
  2. Conducts health services and screening programs as required by law and/or board policies and schedules and supervises health surveys as indicated in NJ Statutes (vision, auditory, tuberculin, scoliosis, growth and development) of students and staff.
  3. Assists the school physician with physical examinations, special examinations for athletics, child study team referrals and employment certifications, etc., makes referrals and conducts follow-up activities as necessary. Consults with school physician for medical direction.
  4. Provides emergency care and notification to parents or guardians in case of sudden illness and administers first aid in case of injury to students or staff according to established policies and procedures.
  5. Maintains up-to-date mandated health records on all students in accordance with the HIPAA regulations.
  6. Helps prevent and control communicable disease through lectures, inspections, exclusion, and re-admission of students and staff in keeping with state and local health regulations and school policies.
  7. Follows board policy regarding suspicions of drug, alcohol, or other substance abuse. Notifies principal or his/her designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
  8. Confers with and advises students, parents, and staff members on matters pertaining to the health and safety of students. Provides health counseling and suggests available resources for assistance.
  9. Assists the principal and the child study team in the identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services. Attends case conferences, staff meetings, and required meetings.
  10. Participates in the development of a comprehensive health education curriculum and serves as a health/safety education resource person to teachers. Assists teachers with instruction of certain health units.
  11. Promotes a healthy/safe school environment by assisting the administration and staff to maintain safe and sanitary conditions throughout the school. Reports problems promptly to the principal.  Recommends modifications to the school environment when the health or safety of students or staff is involved.
  12. Administers prescribed medication to students in accordance with law and board policy and provides a copy of district policy and procedures concerning medication administration to all students and parents/guardians at the start of each school year.
  13. Sends notifications and referral forms to parents regarding any significant health problems of their children that may require further diagnosis and treatment. Investigates attendance problems.
  14. Provides special health care and related services to meet the needs of students with disabilities. This may include developing and updating Individual Health Plan (IHP) for all medically fragile students. Provides staff in-service related to special needs as necessary to enhance students’ education and wellbeing.
  15. Assists the principal with the preparation of the school’s health budget. The CSN will be responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment needs in the health office.
  16. Assists in the development of policies and procedures for comprehensive health education and services. Assists in the dissemination of health materials for classroom instruction.
  17. Prepares and sends health and safety reports as required by law to local and state health departments. This includes annual state reports on tuberculosis and immunization status of students and personnel. Submits monthly and annual written reports of activities to the principal and superintendent.
  18. Oversees all health and safety issues during a building evacuation.
  19. Attends to nursing matters in other district buildings, as directed by the principal or district administration.
  20. Attends professional workshops and conferences, obtaining current information on new trends and policies for school health.
  21. Performs such other appropriate duties as required under law or as may be assigned by the principal or district administration.

 


 

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten (10) Month Contract

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluations of Professional Personnel.
