TEACHER OF CULINARY ARTS
 PAYNE TECH



The Essex County Schools of Technology is seeking a 10-month Teacher of Culinary Arts at Payne Tech for the 2024-25 school year.

Position Purpose
- Under the general supervision of the School Principal, is responsible for teaching students the principles of culinary arts, including food preparation, cooking techniques, kitchen safety, nutrition, and culinary management. This role involves creating lesson plans, instructing practical cooking skills, assessing student progress, and fostering a passion for culinary arts in students.



Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts, Education, or a related field (or equivalent culinary experience).
  • Teaching certification required.
  • Professional experience in the culinary industry, such as a chef, cook, or food service manager.
  • Strong knowledge of culinary techniques, food safety regulations, and nutrition.
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for teaching high school students.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in instructional design and curriculum development.
  • Ability to inspire and engage students with diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Familiarity with integrating technology into the culinary classroom (e.g., digital recipes, cooking videos).


Performance Responsibilities:
  • Instruction and Curriculum Development:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive culinary arts curriculum that covers various cooking techniques, food safety, nutrition, and culinary management.
    • Teach students the fundamentals of food preparation, cooking methods, kitchen equipment use, and presentation skills.
    • Plan and conduct hands-on cooking lessons, demonstrations, and tastings to enhance students' practical skills.
    • Integrate cultural and global culinary traditions into the curriculum to broaden students' understanding of different cuisines.
  • Classroom Management:
    • Maintain a safe and organized kitchen classroom environment, ensuring that all health and safety standards are met.
    • Monitor and assess student performance, providing feedback and support to help them improve their skills.
    • Enforce classroom rules and kitchen safety protocols, including proper use of tools and personal protective equipment.
  • Assessment and Grading:
    • Evaluate students’ culinary skills through practical assessments, written exams, and project-based learning.
    • Grade assignments, projects, and exams, and provide constructive feedback to support student learning and development.
  • Student Engagement:
    • Foster a positive learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and a love for cooking.
    • Mentor students who express an interest in pursuing culinary arts as a career, offering guidance on further education and career opportunities.
    • Organize and supervise extracurricular activities such as cooking competitions, catering events, and community service projects.
  • Professional Development and Industry Awareness:
    • Stay updated on culinary trends, techniques, and educational best practices to ensure a current and relevant curriculum.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and training related to culinary arts and education.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment
 This is a full-time day position during 10 months of the year. This position is governed by the collective bargaining agreement by and between the Board of Education and the Essex County Vocational Education Association.
Compensation
2024-2025 contractual rate

The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools are public schools supported by County, State and Federal Funds. There are five such programs operated by the Board of Education for the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex. These include four high schools and one adult center.  In addition to salary, the Board of Education offers fringe benefits to all employees.
