SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
Assumes professional responsibility for providing specialized instruction to meet the unique educational, physical, and emotional needs of students with significant and complex disabilities.  Achieving academic excellence requires that this Special Education Teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff, particularly the Child Study Team and with parents of each student.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold a NJDOE Students with Disabilities Certificate, #2475 OR Teacher of the Handicapped Certificate, #2470
  • Have excellent experience in teaching and working with children with exceptional needs
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the specialized certification area, including an understanding of the current rules and regulations regarding special education assessment and program requirements
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, children with disabilities, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning and hildren with exceptional needs.
  • Must be able to lift 40+ pounds as much as 20 times per day.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works to achieve New Jersey Learning Standards and district educational goals and objectives by promoting active learning and skills development in the classroom
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil
  • Sets specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives. Assesses and monitors pupil academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction
  • Updates IEP PLAAFP and Goals & Objectives within a timely manner before IEP Meetings
  • Implements Behavior Intervention Plans with fidelity
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve classroom climate conducive to learning. Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy
  • Assists a student who may be physically challenged with movement among activities or with other physical needs, when necessary.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss pupil progress
  • Devises written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts. Plans class activities and lesson presentations that are age-appropriate for the class and meet the individual needs, interests, and ability levels of all pupils
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned
 
EMPLOYMENT TERMS
  • 10-month position
  • Salary as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Reports to the Building Principal and Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction
