Position Title: Special Education (SPED) Teacher

 

General Description: The SPED Teacher is responsible for the content instruction, supervision and evaluation of all students within their teaching assignment and will work within board policies and state laws to develop each child to their fullest potential so that they will be an informed, competent, and responsible citizen capable of assuming a productive place in society.

 

Reports to: Principal, Special Education (SPED) Supervisor

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Instruction and Pupil Contact

  • To develop, adapt, modify and implement an instructional program within his/her classroom in a manner consistent with a student’s Individual Educational Plan
  • Works cooperatively with regular education teaching staff to coordinate instructional activities and to monitor the progress of each pupil and provides support instruction in the regular classroom or resource center as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Maintains records of pupil's educational progress in class record books and/or board approved forms and summarizes these marks for reporting purpose
  • Assists students to set and maintain standards and follow acceptable rules of behavior

 

Develops Lesson Plans and Classroom Learning Activities

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of each pupil.
  • Sets specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
  • Consults with members of the child study team regarding each pupil's educational program, academic program and personal growth.
  • Meets at least once annually with the case manager, parents and other professional staff to review and revise the individualized education program and placement of each assigned pupil.

 

Contact with Parents and Community

  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss pupil progress.
  • Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.

 

Planning and Coordination

  • Participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.

 

Professional Contacts and Other Activities

  • Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities (at least 20 hours per school year).
    • Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.
    • The ability to effectively utilize available technologies.
    • Take adequate measures to insure the health, safety, and welfare of students.
    • Develop a working relationship with all members of the staff and other personnel assigned to the school.
    • Be willing to participate in activities that increase one’s professional development.
    • Keep informed about school policies and procedures.
    • Maintain and update school records as required.
    • Be punctual and maintain regular attendance at school and at prescribed meetings.
    • Complete all required paperwork and responsibilities in a timely manner adhering to all directives and timelines.
    • Maintain ethical and professional behavior in working with school personnel and other agencies.
    • Assumes other related responsibilities and duties within the context of employment and certification as may be directed by school administration, central office, or the Board of Trustees.

  • Duties may require working outside of instructional hours/extended hours.
  • Knowledge of assigned area content
  • Ability to create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective principles of teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a diverse school community.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate or acceptable.

 

Salary/Schedule:  Salary is determined upon experience and qualifications but will not be greater than $55,000.   This is a full-time, 10-month contract position.

 

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree, required.

Must hold acceptable New Jersey Department of Education certificate or eligibility.

One (1) year educational/teaching experience, preferred

 

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with New Jersey State law and the provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of certified staff.

 

Candidates must be able to pass required criminal background check and provide proof of citizenship or legal status.
