JOB DESCRIPTION

Instructional Supervisor of English Language Arts


JOB GOAL: Leonia Public School District is seeking a dynamic and innovative Instructional Supervisor to lead, inspire, and elevate the district’s K-12 English Language Arts (ELA) program. QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. New Jersey Certification as a Teacher in the content area as required.
  2. New Jersey Certification as a Supervisor.
  3. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  4. Master's Degree in related content area.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of current and innovative teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  2. Extensive knowledge of the department content area.
  3. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  4. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  5. Ability to use Genesis, Google for Education Suite, and other software applications as needed.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and parents, and to prepare oral or written communications, such as presentations, reports, memoranda, letters, grant proposals, curriculum documents, workshops and evaluations.
  7. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents, community groups and others contacted in the course of work.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides direction and coordination to ensure comprehensive and sequential curriculum and instruction and development plans in the content area.
  2. ?Coordinates, supervises, and supports teaching of the content area in the District.
  3. Prepares, monitors and implements individual department plans and activities, including leading department staff meetings.
  4. Assists in the observation and evaluation of classroom teaching.
  5. Organizes and coordinates the content area curriculum development activities, including preparation of curriculum guides, resource units and courses of study.  Assures the integration of these areas with the other curricula in the District.
  6. Provides for continuing improvement of instruction through professional development, cooperation with building administrators, teacher observations and classroom visits.
  7. Supports the introduction and utilization of innovative teaching materials and techniques in line with best educational practices.
  8. Organizes and conducts staff meetings for informational, curriculum development and training purposes.
  9. Assists in the recruitment, selection and evaluation of staff.
  10. Plans, compiles and manages the content area local, state and federally funded budgets.
  11. Maintains liaison with the State Department of Education, local universities and state and national professional organizations in the content area.
  12. Coordinates the selection, inventory and ordering of diverse texts, teaching aids, software, supplies and equipment. 
  13. Has a working knowledge of a wide variety of diverse and equitable materials.
  14. Assists in the selection of teaching staff in the content area.
  15. Makes recommendations regarding the placement and educational plans of students.
  16. Keeps current of developments in the content area and provides staff members with assistance and instructional material as appropriate.
  17. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  18. Develops and conducts orientation in the content area for new teaching staff.
  19. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year and salary to be determined by board

ANNUAL EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NJ state law and the provisions of the board's policy on evaluations.
