Description

The Black Horse Pike Regional School District has multiple openings for Special Education Paraprofessionals throughout the District. 

QUALIFICATIONS:    

  1. Prior experience working with Students with Disabilities.
  2. Must have 30 college credits and willingness to obtain a Substitute Teaching Certificate.
  3. Valid Driver’s License
  4. Knowledge or understanding of Federal Child Labor Laws, preferred
  5. Willingness to wear appropriate dress as required by the work site, for example hairnets, etc.

 
REPORTS TO:     The Supervisor of Special Services
 
JOB GOAL:

  1. To assist Special Education teachers who have classes which exceed the maximum size permitted by Code for a teacher but which do not exceed the maximum permitted for a teacher with a paraprofessional.
  2. To assist students one on one in a classroom setting or job site.

 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Specific to Instructional Paraprofessional:

  1. To assist teachers in Special Education classes assigned by the supervisor, to include but not limited to:
    1. grading or checking pupil work
    2. assisting individuals or small groups of students
    3. working with students on computers
    4. maintaining records
    5. distributing and collecting materials, supplies and equipment
    6. accompanying students to the medical office or to other locations
    7. other ministerial or instructional tasks assigned by the teacher
    8. assist students with physical and/or medical needs (i.e. physical movement, toileting)
    9. assist students with attention and focus to task
    10. assist in classroom management
    11. other duties, as assigned
    12. must maintain a current substitute certificate
  2. To substitute for Special Education teachers who must attend child study team meetings, or staffing as directed by the supervisor.

 
Specific to 1:1 Special Education Paraprofessionals

  1. To assist students with physical and/or medical needs (i.e. physical movement, toileting).
  2. To assist students with attention to focus or task.
  3. To assist students as indicated in their IEP to be successful in the school setting.
  4. In the absence of the assigned student, paraprofessionals will perform any combination of the activities listed below, as approved by the supervisor:
    1. attend the student’s classes if deemed by the I.E.P
    2. serve as a paraprofessional in the Special Education Department for the day
    3. prepare activities or materials related to teacher lessons
    4. other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor of Special Education

 
Specific to Job Coach/School Site Mentor

  1. Coordinates through Special Education Supervisor and Structured Learning Experience (SLE) Coordinator the logistics and parameters of the individual student’s work/school schedule.
  2. Orients the student to his/her respective job responsibilities.   This would include work schedule, conditions, rules, breaks, facilities, and expectations.
  3. Communicates progress, both orally and in writing to the SLE Coordinator.  This includes monitoring and recording of identified competencies in the student’s IEP as shared by the SLE Coordinator.
  4. Assist in the identification of the academic and occupational competencies to be attained by the students.
  5. Serve as a liaison/mediator for any school site/workplace conflicts.  This may include reporting conflicts to the SLE Coordinator and helping resolve those conflicts. 
  6. Recording any conflicts discovered in #5, in the student’s file along with the actions taken for resolutions.
  7. Monitor health and safety provisions ensuring a safe work-based learning environment and instructing the students as to proper, safe work procedures and strategies.
  8. Participate in Annual Review and Transition conferences as requested.

 
All Paraprofessionals:

  1. To assist the child study team as directed by the supervisor.
  2. To perform tasks for the Department as assigned by the supervisor.
  3. To monitor and assist students in need of individual services throughout the day and after school, if necessary.

 
Bus Paraprofessional (Substitute only, based on need and availability)

  1.   To assist students with disabilities entering and exiting the school bus.
  2.   To assist with the operation of the wheelchair lift, if necessary.
  3.   To monitor students’ behavior during the bus ride, and to intervene with any difficulties   
       that may arise in order to provide a safe and secure bus environment.
  4.   To monitor and assist students in need of individual services while on the bus.
  5.   Other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or case manager

 
COMPENSATION
 
Employee will be compensated at a negotiated rate with no benefits.  Experience and training may be used in calculating the hourly rate.    Bus paraprofessional hours will be paid as additional pay or overtime rate.

Per policy 4125, the district will give preference to qualified individuals who are residents of the Black Horse Pike Regional School District.
