The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Per Diem Plumber (Night) within the Office of Facilities - Project Control.
DEFINITION : Under direction performs general plumbing work involved in installation and maintenance of plumbing facilities and systems; works with various machine and hand tools common to the plumbing trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with the plumbing code or accepted trade practices; takes the lead over and gives assignments to those assigned as helpers; does other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  1. Three (3) years of experience in plumbing work involving a variety of layout, installation, and maintenance tasks.
  2. Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

NOTE: A valid Master Plumber's license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbing may be substituted for three (3) years of related experience.
NOTE: Applicants may be required to possess a valid Master Plumbers license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers as determined by the Appointing Authority.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Installs, repairs, and/or maintains gas, water, and waste disposal pipes and facilities.
  2. Troubleshoots malfunctions and makes emergency and permanent repairs.
  3. Removes stoppages from piping and toilet, sink, and other facilities.
  4. Works with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil, asbestos composition, and copper pipe.
  5. Installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot compression, and soldered joints.
  6. May cover piping and fittings with asbestos or other compositions.
  7. Is familiar with the nomenclature, use and installation of reducing, pressure relief, surge check, float, gate, globe and other types of valves, unions, sleeves, bushings, reducers and other fittings and valves.
  8. Is responsible for measuring and fitting of piping and facilities.
  9. Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications and roughing-in sheets in accord with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
  10. Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
  11. Makes time and materials estimates.
  12. Makes plumbing tests on work in progress and completed work.
  13. Gives assignments to helpers.
  14. Keeps records.
  15. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  1. Knowledge of problems involved in plumbing work.
  2. Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions and of keeping necessary records.
  3. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
  4. Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
  5. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and use needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
  6. Ability to give assignments.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  8. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  9. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
