JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Head Custodian

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Hold a High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in work involving the heating, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of furniture, offices, and buildings and the reconditioning, care, and maintenance of grounds.
  3. Hold and maintain a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and experience in motivating and directing personnel and in the cleaning and maintaining of school or other facilities.
  2. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organization skills.
  3. Provide required criminal history background check and proof of United States citizenship or legal resident alien status.

REPORTS TO: Principal, Assistant Principal, Coordinator of Facilities, or Custodial Manager

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all staff for excellent performance.
  1. Lead and direct the maintenance and custodial operations and staff of the school.
  1. Inspect, analyze, and determine the cleaning work to be done and the materials needed.
  1. Schedule the custodial staff of the school, and assign and monitor tasks and areas of responsibility, using the specifications of the custodial services plan established by the Director of Facilities to ensure that the school and grounds are clean, attractive, and safe.
  1. Inspect the school and grounds regularly to ensure safety, cleanliness, and attractiveness, completing and submitting all required reports.
  1. Report immediately any hazards or unsafe conditions to the principal.
  1. Ensure that all applicable fire, safety, health, and environmental regulations and laws are observed and exceeded and that no one works in an unsafe or hazardous condition.
  1. Maintain and operate the heating, ventilating, and other mechanical systems of the building to provide proper temperature appropriate to the season with an economical use of fuel, water, and electricity and in compliance with all regulations regarding safety and efficiency of the systems.

9. Display and maintain all required certificates, including the Black Seal license.

10. Direct and take the lead in:

  • Cleaning, maintenance, and care of buildings and grounds.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of desks, chairs, rugs, lighting fixtures, windows, and other furniture and fixtures.
  • Sweeping, washing and sanding of floors and in applying wax and polish to wooden, linoleum, and composition floors.
  • Application of paint remover and turpentine or other cleaning agents to furniture.
  • Reconditioning, care, and maintenance of grounds and parking area. f. Operating the heating and ventilating equipment

11. Make minor repairs to the building, building systems, and grounds.

  1. Request maintenance and repair work that is beyond the scope of the your responsibility or expertise.
  1. Assist the district maintenance staff with repairs and installations.
  1. Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning chemicals, custodial supplies, equipment and tools and request replacements in a timely fashion; provide inventory control to ensure need and proper use, and store supplies and chemicals in a safe and approved manner.
  1. Keep assigned areas of the buildings and grounds neat, clean, attractive, and safe, following the specifications and tasks outlined in the custodial services plan.
  1. Assist with snow and ice removal by shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps.
  1. Check regularly the security of the building and ensure that all exit doors are operational, and that all panic hardware is working when the building is occupied.
  1. Remove graffiti immediately.
  1. Report immediately any damage, vandalism, or theft of equipment.
  1. Remove trash daily and comply with all laws, regulations and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash and waste.
  1. Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and deliveries as required and requested.
  1. Change light bulbs whenever any need replacement.
  1. Participate in safety and “Right to Know” training.
  1. Operate all equipment necessary to carry out job functions and responsibilities.
  1. Make recommendations for improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of custodial operations of the school.
  1. Attend required meetings and serve, as appropriate on staff committees.
  1. Respond to, or arrange for coverage, all fire and security alarms when the assigned building is unoccupied.
  1. Display a cooperative and pleasant attitude at all times, particularly when in the presence of staff, students, and community visitors.
  1. Notify and assist the administration and appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, and potentially dangerous or unusual situations, following district policies and regulations.
  1. Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
  1. Make inspections of the buildings and grounds to note significant conditions and ensure that needed work is done.
  1. Obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise the use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  1. Establish and maintain records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, work done, and time spent.
  1. Report necessary repairs to the authorities and submit work orders appropriately.
  1. Assist in keeping all areas of the buildings and grounds, (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat, clean, and safe.
  1. Serve in the school assigned, substituting in another school when necessary, and remain on school premises during assigned hours, unless assigned to another site.
  1. Demonstrate sufficient strength to lift items as much as fifty (50) pounds and be able to move them around.
  1. Demonstrate sufficient strength and dexterity to operate the equipment and tools necessary for the cleaning of the facilities.
  1. Demonstrate the stamina to stand and work for periods as long as two (2) hours without discomfort.
  1. Demonstrate the ability to climb and work off of a ladder.
  1. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Superintendent, or his designee may assign from time to time and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. Twelve (12) months.
  2. Contract terms, salary, and benefits as established by the collective bargaining agreement.
  3. Conditions established by laws and codes of New Jersey; and policies, rules, and regulations established by the Passaic Board of Education.
  4. Non-Tenurable.
