Description Qualifications
  • 5.5 hours per day.  Salary $25,688.  Benefits not included.
  • 30 college credits from an accredited institution required.
  • Experience supporting students with academic/social/emotional needs, preferred
  • Experience working in a self contained special education program, preferred
     
Responsibilities
  • Performs responsibilities under the supervision of a certified/licensed professional in a manner consistent with the requirements of law, rules and regulations, and local district policies and procedures.
  • Provides supplementary support to students with disabilities by prompting, cueing and redirecting student participation; reinforces personal, social, behavioral, and academic learning goals; and implements teacher-designed follow-up and practice activities.
  • Assists the teacher in locating, arranging, organizing, constructing, managing, adapting or providing appropriate instructional classroom materials and activities suitable for the educational needs and interests of students.
  • Provides for the specific needs of students which may include but not be limited to class and building mobility, the use of adaptive equipment or devices, eating, dressing, personal care and bathroom use (includes diapering).This may require lifting and carrying students and their adaptive equipment.  In addition, this may require being able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting on the floor, standing).
  • Works with students individually, or in small or large groups, to reinforce skills selected by the teacher using various methodologies and follows written plans, seeking clarification as needed.
  • Uses basic strategies and techniques for facilitating the integration of individuals with exceptional learning needs in various settings and fosters their independence, self-esteem, self-awareness, self-control, self-reliance and self-advocacy.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment and supervises students during play activities, boarding and getting off the bus, field trips, in the halls, lunchroom and other unstructured/informal settings.
  • When required to do so and with appropriate certification, is assigned the role of substitute teacher in the classroom or on an emergency basis, in another classroom in that building.
  • Assists the teacher in creating a climate of mutual respect, establishes and maintains rapport with learners and maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Follow behavior plan, individualized treatment plan, and reinforcement schedule as prescribed.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback to modify own behavior based on feedback (oral or written) from certificated staff members and develop knowledge and skill sets accordingly.
  • Possess effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
  • Implement appropriate teaching strategies and behavior modification approaches.
  • Assist with problem solving to improve efficiency and morale within the classroom environment.
  • Commit to ongoing training, coaching and professional development as it relates to professional development, ethics, and technology, and training in order to perform job responsibilities to the required standard.
  • Be flexible in assignments being moved within in the school year to accommodate students’ needs.
  • Collect accurate data on a daily basis and calculate data.  This requires proficiency with computer and electronic device functions for data collection. 
  • Ability to physically intervene when necessary with a student using district safety protocols. 
  • May be required to restrain/hold/transport and utilize quick body movements as indicated in the Behavior Intervention Plan in the course of working with children with challenging behavior through the use of district safety protocols.
  •  Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment that may be assigned by the teacher, principal or Director of Educational Services or as specified in a student's Individualized Education Program.
