PARAPROFESSIONAL (ESL)

The Essex County Schools of Technology is seeking Paraprofessionals (ESL) at Newark Tech & Payne Tech for the 2024-25 school year.

Position Purpose
- Under the supervision of the School Principal and ESL Teacher, the ESL Paraprofessional supports English language learners (ELLs) by providing assistance in the development of their English language skills. They help create an inclusive learning environment that fosters language acquisition and academic success.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Associate’s Degree or higher preferred)
  • NJ Department of Education-approved Paraprofessional Certification or ability to obtain
  • Experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and classroom management techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment
  • Basic proficiency in technology and assistive devices
  • Required criminal history background check
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • Must be a resident of New Jersey or attain residency within one year unless exempted by law


Performance Responsibilities:
  • Support Instruction: Assists the ESL Teacher in implementing lesson plans by providing support during English language instruction and classroom activities.
  • Individual and Group Support: Provides one-on-one or small group instruction to ELLs, reinforcing language concepts and assisting with academic tasks.
  • Language Development: Supports students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
  • Classroom Management: Helps maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment conducive to language learning.
  • Adapt Materials: Modifies instructional materials and resources to meet the diverse linguistic needs of students.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity, helping students adjust to new cultural and linguistic environments.
  • Supervise Activities: Supervises students during non-instructional times, such as recess, lunch, and transitions between activities.
  • Data Collection: Collects and records data on student performance and language development to assist in monitoring progress and adjusting instructional strategies.
  • Communication: Collaborates with teachers, support staff, and families to ensure consistent and effective communication regarding student needs and progress.
  • Assistive Technology: Supports the use of technology and digital resources to enhance language learning and accessibility.
  • Behavior Support: Implements positive behavioral support strategies to help students succeed in the classroom.
  • Professional Development: Participates in professional development opportunities to stay informed about best practices in ESL education.
  • Confidentiality: Maintains confidentiality regarding student information and records in accordance with school policies and legal requirements.
  • Health and Safety: Ensures the health and safety of students by following school protocols and providing necessary assistance during emergencies.
  • Support Activities: Assists with classroom activities, field trips, and school events to ensure all students can participate fully.
  • Feedback: Provides feedback to the ESL Teacher on student progress and any observed challenges or successes.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment
 This is a full-time day position during 10 months of the year. This position is governed by the collective bargaining agreement by and between the Board of Education and the Essex County Vocational Education Association.
Compensation
2024-2025 contractual rate

The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools are public schools supported by County, State and Federal Funds. There are five such programs operated by the Board of Education for the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex. These include four high schools and one adult center.  In addition to salary, the Board of Education offers fringe benefits to all employees. These benefits include maintenance of hospitalization insurance including Medical, Dental and Benecard Prescription Plan.
