ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER 
PAYNE TECH

 
The Essex County Schools of Technology is seeking a ESL Teacher at Payne Tech during the 2024-25 school year.

Position Purpose
-

Under the supervision of the School Principal, the ESL Teacher is dedicated to developing students' proficiency and passion for the English language. This role involves creating an engaging curriculum that supports language acquisition, fostering cultural understanding, and promoting a positive learning environment. The ESL Teacher contributes significantly to students' language skills, cultural awareness, and overall academic success.

Qualifications:

  • Valid New Jersey Teaching Certificate with an ESL endorsement or Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in English.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching methods for English language learners (ELLs).
  • Ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  • Must be a resident of New Jersey or attain residency within one year unless exempted under the law.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Teaches English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in accordance with district curriculum and state standards.
  • Encourages critical and creative thinking while supporting English language acquisition for non-native speakers.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive, and conducive to individualized and small group instruction for ELLs.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for English language instruction that are engaging and relevant to students' needs.
  • Designs activities that emphasize the practical use of English in everyday communication and cultural understanding.
  • Assesses student learning and progress regularly, adjusting instruction to meet the unique needs of individual learners.
  • Keeps up-to-date with district and state guidelines for English language proficiency and incorporates them into lesson planning.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development to remain current with best practices in language education.
  • Maintains accurate records of student performance, activities, and attendance.
  • Fosters parental involvement in students' English education and communicates effectively with parents or guardians.
  • Enforces school and district policies regarding student conduct, ensuring a positive and respectful classroom atmosphere.
  • Collaborates with other ESL and general education teachers to ensure effective support for ELLs and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requests appropriate instructional materials and resources for English language instruction, managing inventory and classroom supplies.


Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment
 This is a full-time dayposition during the 10 months of the year. This position is governed by the collective bargaining agreement by and between the Board of Education and the Essex County Vocational Education Association.
Compensation
2024-2025 contractual rate

The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools are public schools supported by County, State and Federal Funds. There are five such programs operated by the Board of Education for the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex. These include four high schools and one adult center.  In addition to salary, the Board of Education offers fringe benefits to all employees. These benefits include maintenance of hospitalization insurance including Medical, Dental and Benecard Prescription Plan. The Board also maintains a $4,000 Group Life Insurance Policy for each employee.
