TITLE: CUSTODIAN

REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager/School Business Administrator

JOB GOAL: To provide a safe, clean and comfortable school environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 
  1. Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent training/experience.

  2. Has previous experience in custodial-type work.

  3. Holds a current State of New Jersey Black Seal Low Pressure Boiler License or is able to secure one within one year of employment and maintain thereafter on a yearly basis.

  4. Is in good health and able to meet the demands of the position including, but not limited to being able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds and climb a ladder.

  5. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

  6. Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Chief School Administrator may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Building Security

 
  1. Closes the building each day as schedule requires.  Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

  2. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are operational and secure and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.

  3. Carries a two-way radio provided by the school at all times while on duty.

 

Building Work (Cleaning System as per Job Cards)

 
  1. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.

  2. Cleans and dusts classrooms, offices, library, offices, special rooms, and faculty room daily; empties waste baskets in these areas.

  3. Cleans corridors after each school day, and during the day when their condition requires it.

  4. Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures and floors daily, and replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed.

  5. Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily.

  6. Cleans cafeteria dining areas and kitchen after use.

  7. Cleans chalk/white boards daily.

  8. Cleans glass in hallways, entrances, classrooms, offices, and display cases.

  9. Stores supplies and delivers supplies to teachers as directed. 

  10. Performs light maintenance and painting tasks, as needed and directed.

  11. Obeys all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.

  12. Operate and reset the fire alarm, and inspect fire extinguisher as required by State mandate. 

  13. Inspects water level on each boiler daily in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures and maintains a log book for boiler operation.

  14. Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the facilities manager or school business administrator, including but not limited to sound system set up.

  15. Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste, and debris.

  16. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, (i.e., replacing light bulbs) making minor repairs (i.e., desks or chairs) and reporting major repair needs promptly to the facilities manager.

  17. Cleans all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.

  18. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.

  19. Maintains personal work space in a clean and orderly manner.

 

Grounds Work

 
  1. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish and debris.

  2. Shovels, plows, salts, and/or sweeps sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking areas as necessary.

  3. Displays the U.S. flag during school hours on days when school is in session.

 

Other

 
  1. May be required to wear a standard uniform selected by the district for security purposes.

  2. Performs related duties as assigned.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month employee.  Salary to be determined by the board of education

ANNUAL EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NJ State law and the provisions of the board’s policy on evaluations.
