CERTIFIED SCHOOL NURSE
QUALIFICATION/CERTIFICATION: A Professional RN with a Bachelor's Degree
Educationally certified by the State of New Jersey or eligible for same
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Certified School Nurse is a member of the Professional staff who bears the responsibility for carrying out the supportive health services provided for students and staff in accordance with New Jersey regulations and Board of Education policy and procedure.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
The appropriate administrator(s) and/or supervisor(s), as indicated in the district's and respective school's organizational chart(s).
FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
The School Nurse:
- Carries out health screenings mandated by New Jersey state regulations and/or Board of Education policy and procedure.
- Confidentially maintains appropriate individual medical records on all students, which include immunizations, physicals, and the results of mandated screenings.Communicates to pupils and parent/guardian any health problems identified which require follow-up action.
- Refers students and parents to appropriate resources for outside assistance with the health problems identified.
- Follows-up identified health problems in a priority order as judged by the number and severity of the identified concerns.
- Recommends modifications in the student's educational program in accordance with the health problems identified by and/or reported to the school's health department personnel.
- Serves as a consultant and resource person for the health education program for students. Provides the in-services mandated for staff by the Department of Education for Blood Borne Pathogens, Asthma and Diabetes.
- Provides health counseling services for students, parents and staff.
- Serves as liaison among students, parents, staff and the community in the areas of student health and safety concerns.
- Serves as an active member of the Child Study Team when determining the developmental status and/or evaluation of medical data as part of the evaluation process for handicapped students.
- Serves as a consultant for the administration when determining environmental or program changes required to meet the needs of handicapped students.
- Participates in professional meetings, visits health agencies, and attends workshops and conferences designed for professional improvement.
