Senior Mechanic Diesel - Transportation Department


DEFINITION: Under direction, performs varied mechanical work involved in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and mechanized equipment containing diesel engines; works with various machines, testing equipment, and hand tools common to the trade; takes the lead over and gives assignments to mechanics of lower grade; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: 

  • Takes the lead and works with employees doing mechanical work on automobiles and trucks with other motorized and mechanized equipment powered by diesel engines including road construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Diagnoses trouble and disassembles and examines parts for defects and excessive wear.
  • Reconditions and replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings using engine lathes, boring machines, hand tools, and precision-measuring instruments.
  • Takes the lead and performs the work involved in installation, maintenance, and repair of motors, fuel systems, exhaust systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, steering systems, and instruments.
  • May act in the capacity of driver or operator.
  • May do welding of various types or simple blacksmithing.
  • Obtains, stores, records, safeguards, and uses equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintains essential records.
  • Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.


REQUIREMENTS: 
TRAINING: Successful completion of one (1) year of training in diesel engine repair at an accredited community college or vocational school.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of diesel engines.
 
NOTE:  Applicants who do not possess the required year of formal training may substitute one (1) additional year of experience as outlined above.  

NOTE: Possession of a certificate as a diesel mechanic issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for one (1) year of formal training.

LICENSE
 Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
 Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the  class and type of vehicle being operated.


EXAMPLES OF WORK: 
  • Knowledge of diesel motors and equipment and their operation.
  • Knowledge of causes for motor failure, and the steps necessary to correct the condition.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in tearing motors down, installing new parts, and reassembling motors and testing motors, brakes, lights, and other parts of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of procedures for obtaining, storing, recording, safe guarding, and using equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to take the lead over mechanics of lower grade and give them suitable assignments.
  • Ability to analyze mechanical problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to do mechanical work.
  • Ability to obtain, store, record, safeguard, and use equipment,materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to keep necessary records.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
