The success of our athletics programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire school system. This public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/peer/parent pressure for winning is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. The Assistant Coach position includes other aspects such as extended time, risk, injury factor and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that an assistant coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

JOB GOAL
Successfully supervise athletes and team personnel assigned to him/her and assume supervising control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed. Carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program as outlined by the Head Coach. Instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, students shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of good character and moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Hoboken Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation.
- Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
- Attends all state/staff/departmental meetings as required.
- Maintains necessary certification per HBOE, HCIAL, and NJSIAA regulations.
- Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school athletics program.
- Assists the Head Coach in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournaments and special events.
- Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
- Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility and codes of conduct.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment and storage facilities.
- Assists in the administration of seasonal sports physicals as needed.
- Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
- Gives constant attention to a student-athlete’s grades and conduct.
- By his/her presence at all practices, games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
- Completes paperwork on all athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic trainer within 24 hours.
- Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
- Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
- Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment; and submits annual inventory and athlete obligations to the Head Coach.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment.
- Permits athletes to be in only authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
- Secures all doors, alarms, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
- Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
- Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
- Makes press releases, school announcements, and updates the athletics department website when appropriate.
- Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches the fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
- Attends staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Arrives early enough before practices, contests and meetings to adequately prepare; and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions.
- Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by Head Coach.
- Attends contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
- Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be assigned or requested by the Head Coach, Athletics Director, or Principal.
REQUIREMENTS
Hoboken High School has an athletics program with a rich history that has experienced tremendous success. Thus, we strive to field programs led by assistant coaches who:
- Are excellent role models and leaders; and/or
- Possess outstanding organizational and communications skills; and/or
- Competed and/or coached at a high level, preferably at the NCAA or professional level; and/or
- Understand the college recruiting process, including the NCAA Initial Eligibility Center; and/or
- Have experience coaching a championship level high school program; and/or
- Have a working knowledge of AAU/summer programs/off-season training programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants MUST possess the following:
- New Jersey Teacher Certificate or County Substitute Teacher Certificate
- All up to date NJSIAA coaching credentials
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport
- Knowledge and background in the assigned sport
- Ability to maintain a positive learning environment and high standards of conduct among athletes
- Criminal history background check
- Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status
