The Teacher – Computer will serve as a classroom leader of an elective course at elementary and family schools. The Computer Teacher works to provide exceptional instruction that affords all students the opportunity to excel academically and meet technology and computer literacy standards. The Computer Teacher will bring content-specific expertise to instructional planning and delivery in order to equip students with the skills necessary for success in technology application in and outside of the course. Through this role, the Computer Teacher will work relentlessly to increase student achievement levels by consistently setting rigorous academic and behavioral goals for students, monitoring progress towards these goals, and adjusting course when necessary. The Computer Teacher will work actively to build positive and beneficial relationships with parents, guardians and community members in order to impact positively their students’ academic performance.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid New Jersey instructional certificate with an elementary K-6 endorsement, or elementary classroom teacher K-5 endorsement
  • Additional certifications in Microsoft, Google, computer science programming, STEM, or other similar certifications, are preferred, but not required
    • Candidates that are hired in the role will be expected to obtain professional development hours working towards these types of certifications within the first 1-3 years as a Computer Teacher
  • Proof of membership in an outside organization dedicated to improving the quality of the computer teacher profession and/or dedicated to improving technology education in public schools – preferred, but not required
  • At least 1-2 years’ successful experience as an elementary school or K-8 classroom teacher (“successful” means obtaining an effective or highly effective rating)
  • Proof of at least 3-6 credits, with a grade of B or better, in undergraduate or graduate level coursework related to technology and/or computer education, preferably for elementary school
  • Proof of post-college or post-graduate school professional development and formal training in teaching the following subjects at the K-8 level: digital citizenship, cyber-safety, productivity software, Internet/research skills, problem- solving/design, social media literacy is preferred
  • Demonstrated competence in the completion of a performance assessment exercise
    • This performance assessment exercise will require the candidate to create a lesson plan aligned to State Standards related to the learning objectives of elementary and family school students receiving instruction from the computer teacher
    • The performance assessment will be scored by a District administrator
    • For those previously employed in the Computer Teacher position, you may submit a prior lesson plan that fits the criteria for the performance assessment
  • All candidates must pass the performance assessment to be newly hired, or continuously employed, in the Computer Teacher position
  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

QUALIFICATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major roles and responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a classroom leader by providing high quality, differentiated instruction to students
  • Setting rigorous academic and behavioral goals for students and investing students in these goals
  • Implementing and effectively modifying instruction aligned to the district’s educational goals by focusing on high standards and achievement for all students
  • Planning and delivering content that covers, but is not limited to, computer literacy, computer applications, research methods, and technology skills
  • Designing and implementing high-quality, thorough lesson, unit, and long-term plans that equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to master daily objectives and content standards
  • Co-planning with Special Education Teachers when necessary to ensure that the academic and behavioral needs of each student are met
  • Continuously tracking student achievement data and using the data to inform instructional planning and delivery
  • Preparing, leveraging and delivering constructive feedback to students aimed at improving their academic performance
  • Consistently implementing and enforcing rules and consequences in the classroom setting and school-wide
  • Providing continuous evaluation of student progress that is consistent with district established goals and policies, and clearly communicating this progress to all necessary stakeholders
  • Maintaining, monitoring, and reporting students’ grade and attendance records
  • Taking personal responsibility for students’ mastery of academic standards
  • Effectively and innovatively incorporating technological resources into classroom lessons
  • Committing to continual professional growth that leads students to achieve the greatest learning gains
  • Communicating effectively with students, families and colleagues in order to invest all stakeholders in the learning process
  • Attending and actively participating in all professional development, team planning and data analysis meetings

The Teacher – Computer may also take on other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal and/or their designee.
