QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Principal or School Administrator’s (preferred) Certificate
  • Master’s degree in a subject field relevant to special education
  • Three (3) years of supervisory/administrative experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience
  • K-12 experience preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills

REPORTS TO
Superintendent of Schools
 
SUPERVISES
Instructional, Child Study Team, and clerical staff in special services Pre-K-12.
 
JOB GOAL
The Director of Special Services performs district-wide leadership duties relevant to the education of students with special needs.
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Exercise leadership in the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of Special Education programs, pre-school through graduation to ensure district compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Coordinate staff training relevant to the Special Needs Student population at all levels.
  • Evaluates special education staff.
  • Monitor the programs for students requiring out-of-district placements.
  • Schedule and participate in interviews for candidates to be employed as staff members in the Department of Special Services.
  • Conduct meetings to advise staff of district updates relative to policies, procedures, and curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively with the district and building administration, and guidance to schedule local and state assessments.
  • Communicate and conference with parents on a proactive basis to ensure a strong bridge of communication is forged between home and school.
 
  • Function as liaison between general and special education administration and staff.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate an annual Special Education Orientation each year.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight over the Extended School Year Program (ESY) with the building administrators
  • Provide supervision of special education staff members, including teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and child study teams.
  • Attend district administrative and Board meetings relevant to department’s operation.
  • Oversee the district’s grade level curricula and implementation in the special education programs.
  • Work with the Principals to maximize the effectiveness of the Transition Plans as generated by the district’s Transition Coordinator and Case Managers, for pupils beginning at age 14.
  • Review, approve and ensure the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the district's classified students.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of the special education summer program grades Pre-K - 12.
  • Responsible for generation of local, state, and federal reports.
  • Maintain communication with the Principals to maximize cohesive programming for the district’s classified pupils and provide preventative services to students who are possible candidates for special needs classification.
  • Maintain communication with the Superintendent regarding all issues of concern relative to the daily operation of the Department of Special Services.
  • Serve on district, county and state committees as requested by the Superintendent.
  • Supervise Health Services district-wide, including crisis intervention, Section 504, Home Instruction, Early Intervention, Students Assistant Coordination.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing the special education budget and grants.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed and directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
 
SALARY, & EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
 
Salary: Current starting salary $132,000 as per the 2023-2025 Directors Contract
 
Employment Period:            2024-2025 School Year
