Description

Harbor School in Eatontown, NJ is seeking a long- term substitute certified school nurse/RN to serve as the provider for the health and wellness of students and staff.

Harbor School operates as a private day school, approved by the NJ Department of Education, providing an enhanced alternative to the public school districts for students with disabling conditions. The program provides an individual and holistic approach to meet the functional academic and behavioral needs of the most challenging students from sending districts. We provide a nurturing and supportive environment that includes skilled nursing care provided by a registered nurse, instruction in health promotion and disease prevention, health screenings, provided annually and administration of medications and first aid procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS: Recommended NJ School Nurse Certification K-12, RN license required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident/alien status.

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Supervisor of Instruction

RESPONSIBILITES:

Assists pupils and staff in attaining and/or maintaining optimum health.

Promotes positive health habits and attitudes.

Assesses the physical well-being of the pupil in terms of present health status.

Coordinates the health referral process and communicates health findings to appropriate persons and/or agencies.

Provides health counseling for pupils, parents and staff.

Maintains a comprehensive health history and health appraisal record system.

Provides direct health care services to pupil and staff.

Maintains a communicable disease control program.

Participates in the child study process by interpreting significant finding of health history, physical assessment and reports of medical consultants as warranted.

Consults with staff regarding modification or change in educational environment necessitated by pupil's health status.

Administers medication to individual pupils as prescribed by the child's physician and accompanied written prescription.

Oversees security of medications which are administered to children.

Initiates, facilitates and maintains liason between the school and community health agencies.

Coordinates and/or implements in-service education on related medical issues.

Accompanies sick/injured child to the hospital as warranted.

Notify parents of health/medical intervention the day of treatment.

Attends open house and parent conferences.

Conducts scoliosis and vision screenings.

Maintains first aid kits.

Completes state/county medical reports as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.

Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.

Working knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.

Ability to identify abnormal growth and development, and symptoms of disease.

Ability to develop and maintain student health records.

Ability to develop positive working relationships.

Evidence of successful school nurse experience preferred.

Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of health services, physical assessments, organization and administration of the school's health program and clinical experience in a school nurse office.
