Description

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of fleet experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of mechanical operation of automobiles, trucks and buses, including mechanical experience.
  • Must be able to work with grease, oil, fuel, soaps, and other vehicle fluids on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to diagnose mechanical failures.
  • Must be able to perform major and minor mechanical repairs.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey Class B driver’s license with air brake and passenger endorsement and be in compliance with other state statutes.
  • Must be able to lift and carry vehicle components of 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and bend for long periods of time to do repairs.
  • Must be able to do work outside in inclement weather to repair school district vehicles.
  • Must be ASE certified in all school bus tests series in addition to Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in MEDIUM/HEAVY truck test series for gas/diesel engines and preventive maintenance inspection.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the school district fleet in a safe and satisfactory operating condition and prevent any interruption in the educational program.
  • Available for overtime on an as-needed basis.
  • Supply own tools up to 1 1/4”, including sockets, wrenches, hacksaws, etc.; specialized equipment will be purchased by the Board of Education.
  • Perform all duties in the most efficient manner possible and cooperate with all supervisors, office staff, and co-workers in the interest of the school system.
  • Direct the service and repair program for the school district vehicles.
  • Schedule fleet for major and minor repairs.
  • Advise drivers of proper care and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair school district vehicles.
  • Direct, schedule and perform preventive maintenance program on all school district vehicles.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies necessary for the operation of the transportation program.
  • Maintain and update individual vehicle maintenance records on all school district vehicles.
  • Order parts and supplies for Bus Maintenance Department.
  • Respond to road calls as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation.
  • Review and recommend items for inclusion in new equipment specifications.
  • Assist the Supervisor of Transportation at accident scene.
  • Assist the Supervisor of Transportation with new and additional equipment necessary for students with special needs.
  • Prepare schedule and follow up on required state inspection program for transportation vehicles.
  • Maintain garage in safe and orderly manner.
  • Participate in seminars, in-service programs, etc., related to the transportation program.
  • Directly responsible to maintain a legal disposal of toxic chemicals, oils and tires within the guidelines of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other agencies.
  • Responsible to assist the school district maintenance department in the removal of snow, as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation.Perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation and/or designee.

Employees of the Morris School District hired after the effective date who do not reside in the State of New Jersey at the time of hire have one year from the effective date of employment to relocate their primary residence to New Jersey. Employees of the school district hired prior to the September 1, 2011 effective date of this Act are grandfathered and are not required to relocate to New Jersey.
