ROLE OVERVIEW:

The mission of the Camden City School District (CCSD), Office of Safety and Security (OSS) starts with a "commitment to excellent performance.” The Office of Safety and Security will support the vision for Camden City School District by ensuring that all students safely arrive to school, are in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning, and arrive back to their homes safely. In keeping with the mission of the Office of School Safety, the Night Watchman is responsible for providing continuously improving service, protection, and safety for the well-being of all students, staff, property, and other assets in accordance with the policies as approved by CCSD. The Night Watchman follows School District approved policies and procedures during an assigned tour of duty; provides assistance and protection to persons and property in and about School District buildings, office grounds, and parking areas; maintains orderly conditions, and takes the appropriate measures required to assure observance of the law and School District policies. The Night Watchman shall be responsible for protecting the safety and welfare of students, school personnel, and property in accordance with policies of the Board of Education as set forth in approved Administrative Regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • One to three months previous security or surveillance experience preferred
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently move around all work areas
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical and computer functions
  • Ability to respond calmly and make rational decisions in stressful situations with co-workers, guests, and vendors
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to promote a cooperative approach between departments
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to communicate with emergency responders and with personnel ranging from senior level officials to rank and file security officers
  • Ability to work varying a schedule to include: all shifts, all days, and holidays
  • Excellent interpersonal and employee relations skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills, must be fluent and literate in English
  • Health and physical characteristics suitable for law enforcement duties
  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • Driver’s license and insurance

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the responsible person in school buildings and property to provide for the safety and welfare of students and school personnel, under the direction of the Operations Officer and/or School Security Manager
  • Maintain decorum and order on school grounds and in the vicinity of schools and at schools and Board of Education events as directed by the Operations Officer or Chief of Security.
  • Carry out administrative procedures necessary in maintaining safety and welfare including liaising with public safety officials and school officials
  • Monitor the buildings at all times
  • Comply with the strict regulation against sitting down and socializing
  • Maintain record of incidents
  • Present written descriptive reports for major incidents
  • Drive vehicles to transport individuals or equipment
  • Investigate illegal or suspicious activities
  • Maintain public order and security
  • Monitor access or flow of people to prevent problems
  • Operate surveillance equipment to detect suspicious or illegal activities
  • Patrol district properties to maintain safety
  • Prevent unauthorized individuals from entering restricted areas
  • Request emergency personnel
  • Respond to emergencies to provide assistance
  • Warn individuals about rule violations or safety concerns
  • Write operational reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned
