Qualifications:

• Valid New Jersey School Counselor Certification or Certificate of Eligibility.
• Demonstrated knowledge of counseling techniques and best practices for supporting student development.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
• Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
• Must be a resident of New Jersey or attain residency within one year unless exempted under the law.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Provides individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, career, and personal/social needs.
• Assists students in setting and achieving personal goals, making informed decisions, and developing effective coping strategies.
• Facilitates students’ academic planning and course selection in collaboration with teachers and families.
• Supports students in preparing for post-secondary options, including college, vocational training, and employment.
• Monitors and assesses student progress, attendance, and behavior, and provides appropriate interventions when needed.
• Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to develop comprehensive support plans for students.
• Refers students and families to external resources and community agencies when additional support is needed.
• Maintains accurate and confidential records of counseling activities and student progress, following school and district guidelines.
• Participates in professional development opportunities and stays current with best practices in school counseling.
• Contributes to a positive school climate and supports school-wide initiatives for student well-being and achievement.

The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools are public schools supported by County, State and Federal Funds. There are five such programs operated by the Board of Education for the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex. These include four high schools and one adult center.  In addition to salary, the Board of Education offers fringe benefits to all employees.
