LABORATORY ASSISTANT

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Laboratory Assistant in the Office of Science.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for this position will be placed as a provisional employee. Upon hire, the employee will be required to complete a 90-Day Working test period during which the employee’s performance will be evaluated. Employee must successfully complete the designated probation period in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist or other supervisor in a chemical, bacteriological, serological, forensic, research, animal industry, or other laboratory in a department, agency, or institution; assists with the work involved in maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment; does related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. BS Degree or Equivalent in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field (preferred).
2. One (1) year of non-technical experience in a laboratory.
3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Washes, sterilizes, stores, and prepares for the shipment and distribution of vials, bottles and other containers used by the laboratories.
2. May take operation of a sterilizing room.
3. Inspects bottles, vials, and other containers for cleanliness, and checks on the proper use of cleaning solutions.
4. Stores and seals delicate sterilizing laboratory equipment.
5. May oversee the care of animal cages and equipment.
6. As directed, operates the autoclave and sees that the sterile product is put in tubes and properly labeled.
7. Checks supplies of specimen containers and informs the supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
8. Maintains records of containers, dispatched and received.
9. Assists in preparing and maintaining charts and other laboratory records.
10. Maintains essential laboratory records and flies.
11. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12. Aid in the technical preparation of activities in all areas of the laboratory including assisting in managing laboratory stations and equipment (preferred).
13. Aid in facilitating and assisting with the implementation of all program activities, including training, tracking program metrics and reporting, etc. (preferred).
14. Attend training in curricula and follow up with utilization of technical assistance (preferred).
15. Perform other duties as deemed necessary to support the organization (preferred).
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of the following:
1. Knowledge of the methods used to maintain laboratory facilities and equipment.
2. Knowledge of the equipment commonly used in laboratories.
3. Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written instructions.
4. Ability to follow prescribed procedures and in the proper ways of cleaning, handling and sterilizing equipment and laboratory materials.
5. Ability to maintain established records and files.
6. Ability to keep accurate and precise records.
7. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
8. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
9. Ability to lift and carry boxes and equipment up to 40 lbs. (preferred)

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
1. Salary Range: $46,284 - $48,509
2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Month
3. Union Affiliation: Local 617
