SENIOR SECURITY GUARD
(Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)


The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Senior Security Guard.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that as a candidate for this position, you will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date you will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidate must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
  2. One (1) years of experience in the safeguard of property and/or persons.
  3. Possession of a driver’s license, valid in New Jersey, only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
DEFINITION
Under direction, of a Supervising Security Guard or other supervisory official, takes the lead over one or more security guard(s) responsible for patrolling and monitoring public buildings and grounds to safeguard people and property; performs other related duties as required.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Protection of Buildings, Contents, and Occupants from Hazards:
  1. Visually inspects window bars, doors, locks, and other fixtures to ensure they are secure or properly locked.
  1. Inspects assigned areas for those conditions that may contribute to fire (e.g. discarded burning cigarettes) and ensures that fire extinguishers are in place, secured, and operational.
  1. Observes odors in buildings or on the grounds to detect the source of smoke and/or gas seepage.
  1. Listens for unusual sounds to detect leaking plumbing, breakage of glass and tampering of locks or windows.
  1. Searches designated areas for explosive devices using a flashlight and precautionary measures not to disturb potential explosives, and notifies bomb disposal unit by calling a special number at the local police department.
  1. Patrols by vehicle or on foot grounds adjacent to public buildings to detect hazards such as fire, theft and vandalism.
  1. Monitor electronic surveillance equipment; responds to and reports all suspicious activity.
  1. Maintains an orderly flow of individuals entering and leaving a building.
  1. Examines credentials, such as employee passes and press passes, at entry point buildings or facilities and/or issues special passes to visitors.
  1. Requests verbal or written information from individuals regarding their destination, identity, and nature of visit.
  1. Accompanies employees from the office building to the parking lot or street, or rides in a motor vehicle to prevent possible theft or loss of money or valuables that are being transported.
  1. Visually inspects gauges, meters, and other instruments to ensure that equipment on public property is functional and has not been tampered with.
  1. Observes departing individuals who carry unusually large packages or bundles to prevent the theft of government property such as office equipment, books, and films; determines if the individual warrants searching.
  1. Searches packages of those entering the building for firearms or other dangerous objects.
  1. May escort employees to their automobile in the parking lot to ensure their safe departure.
  1. Removes unwilling persons from the premises after issuing a verbal warning regarding disorderly conduct, loitering, unauthorized entry, etc.
  1. Restrains violent, disorderly and disruptive persons.
Information and communication:
  1. Notifies other guard personnel to be on the lookout for a person or persons of a particular description.
  1. Gives verbal warnings to individuals of regulations such as disorderly conduct, loitering, smoking, or entry without proper passes.
  2. Obtains a verbal description, via telephone or walkie-talkie, of person or persons present in the building who may present a potential danger.
  1. Informs building occupants to evacuate premises and warns about impending danger from explosives, fires,
  1. Gives instructions to occupants for prompt evacuation to designated safe area.
  1. Appears in court as a witness to testify against persons being charged with vandalism, theft, fire, or misconduct on government property.
  1. Responds to general inquiries about the location of persons or services available, physical layout of a facility, etc.
Accidents:
  1. Determines the severity of a person’s injuries and obtains assistance by contacting an emergency vehicle to transport to emergency medical care facilities.
  1. Administers emergency first aid when necessary.
Traffic Control:
  1. Stands at intersections and gives hand signals to moving vehicles to ensure smooth and rapid flow of traffic.
  1. Guides pedestrians in crossing intersections to prevent vehicular congestion and accidents.
  1. Checks cars in restricted parking areas, such as employee or visitor parking lots for parking authorization stickers and issues warnings or citations to unauthorized individuals.
  1. Prevents entry or use of a restricted area by certain vehicles by using hand signals or explaining to drivers the regulations or rules which prohibit entry.
  1. Admits entry of vehicles after identifying pertinent data such as driver's identification, weight and size of vehicle.
  1. Drives government vehicle(s) belonging to an employee to move it from an area where it is obstructing the smooth flow of traffic.
Other:
  1. Takes the lead over one or more security guard responsible for patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel.
  1. Provide guidance and assistance to lower level guards when difficult or unusual situations arise
  1. May provide assignment and instructions to guards.
  1. Records observations of conditions in buildings or in assigned areas reporting any unusual occurrence, property damage, or mishaps to visitors.
  1. Documents rule violations to provide a permanent record of incidents for police or other investigatory individual and inform guard on next shift of past activities.
  1. Attends classroom training programs on work related topics such as bomb detection and first aid.
  1. Attends roll call to listen to announcements of work assignment and other related information.
  1. Records the location of missing or damaged signs and warnings, and submits it to supervisor for corrective actions.
  1. May detain law violators until the arrival of law enforcement.
  1. Questions suspicious persons who violators until the arrival of law enforcement.
  1. Turns key or records visits at watch stations to indicate that rounds have been completed at specified intervals.
  1. Reports security rounds or checks to supervisor or another appropriate individual.
  1. Reports unusual conditions or malfunctioning of equipment to supervisor or another appropriate individual.
  1. Takes temporary measures to correct malfunction to prevent further damage to building.
  1. Seizes contraband or stolen property and detains suspects for questioning.
  1. Escorts unruly persons from premises.
  1. May operate an elevator for security purposes to limit access of persons to and from certain floors and buildings so as to preserve and maintain security of such areas.
  1. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

1. Salary Range: $52,205 - $54,943
