The School Nurse is responsible for carrying out the goals for the school health program and is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of students, staff, and the school community. They strive to create a safe and nurturing environment that enhances learning and academic success by providing quality health services, promoting health education, and helping to address health-related issues effectively. The School Nurse works to ensure that all students have access to the care they need to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally in the school setting.
Experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably in pediatric or adolescent care.
Familiarity with school health services, including conducting physical examinations, immunizations, and health screenings.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to student health and safety, including immunization requirements and student health records.
Ability to collaborate effectively with school administration, teachers, parents, and community healthcare providers.
Experience in managing and maintaining health records for students, including confidential information and medical histories.
Proficiency in providing first aid and emergency care to students in school settings.
Understanding of health education principles and ability to communicate health-related information to students, staff, and parents.
Experience in conducting health assessments and developing individualized health plans for students with chronic illnesses or special healthcare needs.
Familiarity with the implementation of policies and procedures related to student health, including medication administration and management of communicable diseases.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote student wellness and safety within the school environment.
Administer school health services, including physical exams and screenings for hearing, vision, and scoliosis.
Works with a certified trainer to ensure athletes have clearance to participate in athletics.
Identify students in need of dental and medical care and facilitate appropriate referrals.
Advise the principal on the care of students experiencing injuries or medical emergencies.
Conduct regular student health observations to identify and address health needs promptly.
Enforce school policies regarding student exclusion, readmission, and immunization requirements.
Foster positive relationships with students to support their health and well-being.
Communicate pertinent medical and health information to parents, school personnel, and relevant external agencies as needed.
